Most people assume a sleep aid is a sleep aid. Two out of three of today's claims say the details matter more than that.

TODAY'S TOPIC: Sleep

CLAIM 1:

"Melatonin supplements help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply."

VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED

Melatonin sits on drugstore shelves next to vitamins, which makes it feel like a general sleep fix. It is more specific than that.

Melatonin is a timing hormone, not a sedative. It helps shift when your body is ready for sleep, which makes it genuinely useful for jet lag or a shifted schedule. It does very little to improve sleep depth or how long you stay asleep once you are there.

Taking it for general insomnia often disappoints people for exactly this reason. It is solving a clock problem, not a depth problem.

CLAIM 2:

"Women need more sleep than men."

VERDICT: TRUTH

This one rarely gets said out loud, but the research backs it up. The difference is not enormous, but it is consistent.

Studies on sleep architecture show women tend to spend more time in slow-wave sleep, the deep restorative stage, and often need slightly more total sleep to feel fully rested. Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle and through menopause add extra demand on top of that.

If you have ever felt like you needed more sleep than the men in your life to function the same way, that was not in your head.

CLAIM 3:

"A glass of wine before bed helps you fall asleep faster."

VERDICT: MYTH

Alcohol does make you drowsy, so this one feels true in the moment. The second half of the night tells a different story.

Alcohol suppresses REM sleep in the first half of the night and then triggers a rebound effect later, which fragments sleep and often causes early waking. You may fall asleep faster and still wake up less rested than if you had skipped it.

The nightcap effect is a sedation effect, not a sleep quality effect. Those are not the same thing, even though they feel similar for the first twenty minutes.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Sleep is not one switch you flip. It is several systems working together, and each of tonight's claims was really about just one of them.
