Shingles and the Shingles Vaccine
|
| Your mother may have told you shingles is something that happens to other people. The CDC puts the odds at one in three. |
“The shingles vaccine prevents more than 90% of cases in adults 50 and older.”
Vaccine numbers rarely sound this decisive. These ones come from the CDC.
Shingrix was 97% effective at preventing shingles in healthy adults 50 to 69 and 91% effective in adults 70 and older. It was also 91% effective at preventing postherpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain that can last months or years after the rash, in adults 50 and older.
It is given as 2 doses, 2 to 6 months apart. These figures come from trials in people with healthy immune systems.

“If you cannot remember having chickenpox, shingles is not a risk for you.”
Many people assume a childhood memory settles the question. The virus does not need your memory.
About 99% of adults over 50 have had chickenpox, according to the vaccine maker's data, and the virus stays in the body after the illness ends. It can reactivate later as shingles, and the CDC recommends the vaccine for all adults 50 and older.
Your recall of a childhood rash is a poor guide to what is dormant in your nerves.

“Shingles vaccine protection lasts for life.”
Nobody has a lifetime of data yet. Shingrix was approved in 2017.
The CDC reports that immunity stayed high for at least 7 years in adults 70 and older. A follow-up reported nearly 80% efficacy in adults 50 and older for up to 11 years, according to the National Council on Aging.
Experts are not yet sure whether a booster will be needed later. So far, the record is strong and still being written.
