VERDICT: MYTH
The twenties get treated as the ceiling for bone strength, after which decline is assumed to begin immediately. The actual peak arrives a bit later than that.
Bone density continues to increase modestly into your late twenties and often does not reach its true peak until around age 30, particularly in the hip and spine. Well-established research on bone accrual confirms this window extends further than the common assumption suggests, though the rate of gain slows considerably after the mid twenties.
There is more runway in your twenties for building bone than most people are told.

VERDICT: MYTH
Osteoporosis carries a strong cultural association with older women specifically, which leaves a meaningful population overlooked. Men develop it more often than the stereotype accounts for.
Roughly one in four men over 50 will experience an osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime, according to well-established epidemiological research, though men are typically diagnosed later since screening guidelines have historically focused on women. Men also tend to experience more severe outcomes after a fracture, in part because of this diagnostic delay.
The stereotype has real consequences for the people it leaves out of the conversation.

"Certain styles of yoga provide enough mechanical load to count as genuine bone-building exercise."
VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED
Yoga gets grouped with gentle, low-impact movement broadly, which undersells what some poses are actually doing. The bone-building effect depends heavily on which poses and how they are held.
Weight-bearing poses that load the spine and hips, like certain standing and balance postures held with intention, have shown modest positive effects on bone density in small studies. Gentler, restorative styles of yoga generally do not provide enough mechanical load to meaningfully affect bone density on their own.
Not all yoga counts equally here. The pose and the effort behind it matter more than the label on the class.
