This explanation has been repeated for decades and feels intuitive, since endorphins are widely known as the body's natural painkillers. The actual chemistry points somewhere else entirely.

Endorphins released during exercise struggle to cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning circulating endorphins in the blood may not be reaching the brain regions responsible for euphoria at all. A controlled human study blocking opioid receptors with a drug called naltrexone found runners still experienced the euphoric high, while blood levels of endocannabinoids, a separate class of molecules chemically related to cannabis, rose substantially after running.

The feeling is real. The molecule getting credit for it has been the wrong one all along.

This idea, known as the facial feedback hypothesis, has circulated for decades as a quick mood hack. Recent large-scale attempts to confirm it have produced a more mixed picture than the original research suggested.

Some studies support a modest mood-lifting effect from physically engaging smiling muscles, even without genuine happiness behind the expression. However, a large multi-lab replication effort involving numerous research teams found the effect to be smaller and less consistent than earlier research indicated, with results varying meaningfully depending on study conditions.

There may be something real here. It is a much smaller nudge than the popular version of this advice suggests.
