VERDICT: MYTH

Standard lipid panels check LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol. There is a separate, largely genetic particle that gets left out entirely.

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a distinct cholesterol-carrying particle that is roughly 70% to 90% genetically determined and can meaningfully raise cardiovascular risk even when LDL looks completely normal. It requires a separate blood test, and research shows only about 1% of Americans have ever had it measured, despite an estimated one in five people worldwide carrying an elevated level.

Since Lp(a) is barely affected by diet or exercise, knowing your number matters mainly for understanding your overall risk picture, not for changing daily habits.

This one sounds like folk wisdom dressed up as science. The underlying blood vessel response is genuinely real, even if temporary.

Cold exposure triggers vasoconstriction, a narrowing of blood vessels near the skin, followed by vasodilation once the body warms back up. This alternating pattern is a well-established physiological response, and some research suggests repeated exposure may modestly improve vascular responsiveness over time, though the effect on long-term cardiovascular outcomes is not yet clearly established.

Your blood vessels are genuinely doing something in response to that cold blast. What it adds up to over months is still an open question.

"Regularly donating blood provides a measurable cardiovascular benefit beyond helping others."

VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED

Blood donation gets framed purely as an act of generosity toward someone else. There is a genuine physiological angle for the donor too, though the evidence is not fully settled.

Regular blood donation reduces stored iron levels, and some research has linked lower iron stores to reduced oxidative stress on blood vessel walls, theoretically supporting cardiovascular health. Other large studies have found no significant reduction in heart attack risk among frequent donors specifically, so the picture remains mixed rather than conclusive.

The generosity is not in question. The direct cardiovascular payoff for the donor is still being worked out.
