"Iron deficiency always causes noticeable fatigue, so a normal energy level rules it out."
VERDICT: MYTH
Fatigue gets treated as the reliable warning sign for low iron. For a meaningful number of women, that sign never shows up clearly.
Iron deficiency can exist for a significant stretch of time before hemoglobin drops low enough to cause the classic fatigue, and some women compensate well enough that energy levels stay largely normal even with low iron stores. Symptoms like hair thinning, restless legs, or trouble concentrating sometimes appear before fatigue does, or instead of it.
Well-established research on iron deficiency in women of reproductive age confirms this variability. Feeling fine is not the same as having enough iron.
● CLAIM 2:
"Blending fruits and vegetables into a smoothie preserves essentially the same nutrition as eating them whole."
VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED
Smoothies get treated as a nutritional shortcut, all the benefit with less chewing. Some of that holds up, and some of it does not.
Blending does preserve most vitamins and minerals, since it is a mechanical process rather than a chemical one. But it also breaks down fiber structure significantly, which changes how quickly sugars from fruit are absorbed and can blunt the blood sugar benefit that whole fruit normally provides.
The nutrients are largely still there. The way your body processes them is not quite the same.
● CLAIM 3:
"Most probiotic supplements survive stomach acid and reach the gut alive and effective."
VERDICT: MYTH
Probiotics get sold on the promise of live cultures doing real work. Getting those cultures past the stomach is the harder problem nobody mentions.
Stomach acid is highly effective at killing bacteria, which is its job, and most standard probiotic capsules lose a significant portion of their live culture count before ever reaching the intestines. Research comparing different probiotic formulations has found survival rates vary enormously depending on the strain and the capsule's protective coating.
Enteric coated capsules, designed specifically to resist stomach acid, show meaningfully better survival in studies. A plain capsule from the drugstore shelf is a gamble on strain and formulation, not a guarantee.
THE BOTTOM LINE
What you swallow is only part of the story. What actually survives, absorbs, and shows up in your body is the part that counts.
