VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED
Testosterone gets far less attention in women's health than estrogen, and lately it has started getting blamed for a wide range of symptoms. The evidence for that blame is thinner than the conversation suggests.
Women do produce testosterone, and levels do decline gradually with age, though far less sharply than the estrogen drop at menopause. Research linking low testosterone specifically to fatigue and mood in women is limited, with mixed results across studies and no clear diagnostic threshold that reliably predicts symptoms.
Testosterone therapy is FDA approved for one specific use in women: treating low sex drive after menopause, and the evidence there is stronger. As a general energy or mood fix, the research has not caught up to the marketing.
● CLAIM 2:
"Cortisol levels measured through a standard blood test can vary significantly depending on the time of day the sample is drawn."
VERDICT: TRUTH
This detail rarely gets explained when a cortisol test gets ordered. It changes how much a single result can actually tell you.
Cortisol follows a strong daily rhythm, peaking shortly after waking and declining steadily through the day, sometimes dropping by more than half by evening. A single measurement without noting the time drawn can look abnormally high or low simply because of when it was taken, not because of an underlying problem.
Well-established research on cortisol rhythms is why doctors often request multiple samples across the day, or specify morning timing, for an accurate read. One number without context is closer to a snapshot than a diagnosis.
● CLAIM 3:
"Oxytocin only plays a role in romantic bonding and childbirth."
VERDICT: MYTH
Oxytocin picked up a nickname, the love hormone, that boxed it into a narrow role. Its actual function reaches much further than romance.
Oxytocin is released during a wide range of social interactions, including hugging a friend, petting a dog, and even certain types of supportive conversation. Research shows it also plays a role in regulating stress response and inflammation, functioning as part of the body's broader calming system, not just a romantic bonding chemical.
A growing body of evidence connects oxytocin release to the physical stress relief people feel from social connection generally. The nickname undersold it considerably.
THE BOTTOM LINE
