Most women assume a heart attack announces itself with crushing chest pain. Two of today's three claims say the warning looks different than that.

CLAIM 1:

"Women having a heart attack usually feel the same crushing chest pain men do."

VERDICT: MYTH

This idea comes from decades of research built almost entirely on male patients. Women's symptoms got studied later, and they often look nothing like the textbook version.

Women having a heart attack frequently report nausea, jaw pain, extreme fatigue, or shortness of breath, sometimes with little or no chest pain at all. That mismatch is a major reason women's heart attacks get misdiagnosed or dismissed in emergency rooms.

Well-established research now confirms these differences are physiological, not just reporting differences. Smaller blood vessels and different plaque patterns in women's hearts produce different symptoms.

If something feels wrong, the absence of chest pain does not mean the absence of danger.

CLAIM 2:

"Loud snoring can be an early sign of heart disease risk."

VERDICT: TRUTH

Snoring gets treated as a nuisance for the person sleeping next to you. The research suggests it deserves more attention than that.

Loud, frequent snoring is a common marker of sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Sleep apnea forces the cardiovascular system through repeated stress cycles every night, raising blood pressure and taxing the heart.

A growing body of evidence links untreated sleep apnea to higher rates of hypertension, irregular heart rhythms, and heart failure over time. Women are also frequently underdiagnosed, since apnea symptoms in women can look different than the classic profile.

The snoring itself is not the danger. What it might be pointing to is.

CLAIM 3:

"A lower resting heart rate always means a healthier heart."

VERDICT: IT'S COMPLICATED

A slow, steady pulse gets treated as the gold standard of fitness. For most people, that is a fair association. It is not automatic.

Endurance training does lower resting heart rate by making the heart more efficient per beat. That is a genuine sign of cardiovascular fitness. But an unusually low heart rate can also signal a conduction problem in the heart's electrical system, especially if it comes with dizziness or fatigue.

The number alone does not tell the difference. Context matters: fitness level, symptoms, and how the rate behaves during exertion.

A very low number paired with feeling fine is different from a very low number paired with feeling off.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Your heart does not always raise its hand the way you were taught to expect. Pay attention to what it is actually doing.
