This is one of the most repeated numbers in midlife health conversations. Large-scale metabolic research has actually contradicted it.

A major study tracking energy expenditure across thousands of people found metabolic rate stays fairly stable from your 20s through your 60s. The real decline does not show up in a meaningful way until well after 60.

That does not mean nothing changes at 40. It means the specific claim of a dramatic drop at that exact age is not what the data shows.

CLAIM 2:

"Muscle loss after menopause lowers your metabolic rate more than aging itself."

VERDICT: TRUTH

This gets buried under the general "metabolism slows with age" narrative. The more precise cause deserves its own spotlight.

Muscle tissue burns more energy at rest than fat tissue does. When estrogen drops and muscle mass declines faster after menopause, your resting metabolic rate drops along with it.

This is a mechanical effect, not an inevitable aging effect. Maintaining muscle through resistance training can directly offset this specific decline.
